About Spirit AeroSystems

Spirit AeroSystems is a first-tier manufacturer of aerostructures, meaning they supply directly to Original Equipment Manufacturers. The company manufactures and supplies important components of many Boeing aircraft, including the fuselage of the 737, sections of the 787 fuselage, and the cockpit section of the fuselage on the majority of all Boeing aircraft. Spirit also produces equipment for other companies, such as the fuselage sections and front wing spars on the Airbus A350.

Spirit AeroSystems was founded in 2005 through the sale of Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ Wichita division to Onex, an investment firm. Boeing Defense, Space, and Security retained its military business in Wichita until selling most of those properties to Air Capital Flight Line. The Wichita division was responsible for building many of Boeing’s most important aircraft, such as the B-29 Superfortress, B-47 Stratojet, and B-52 Stratofortress. Spirit’s history can also be traced back to Stearman Aircraft, which was later acquired by Boeing. In addition to the company’s Wichita presence, Spirit’s facilities also comprise North American Aviation’s Tulsa and McAlester facilities in Oklahoma, as well as additional sites in North Carolina, Scotland, France, and Malaysia.
