About Sikorsky
Sikorsky is an American manufacturer of aircraft and rotorcraft based in Stratford, Connecticut. The company was established in 1923 by Igor Sikorsky and was one of the first companies to produce helicopters for civilian and military use. Previously owned by United Technologies Corporation, the company was acquired by Lockheed Martin in 2015.
Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation was founded in May of 1923 near Roosevelt Field, New York. In 1925, the company’s name was changed to Sikorsky Manufacturing Company. Sikorsky moved to Stratford, Connecticut in 1929 and became part of United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (later United Technologies Corporation) in July of that year. In the United States, the company focused on the development of multi-engined landplanes and amphibious aircraft. In the late 1930s, sales declined and Sikorsky was merged with Vought Aircraft. The company then began development of a practical helicopter. After flying the Vought Sikorsky VS-300, Sikorsky began developing the Sikorsky R-4, the first stable, single-rotor, fully controllable helicopter. The R-4 entered full-scale production in 1942 and would prove to be the design on which most future helicopters were based.
Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation remains a leading helicopter manufacturer today, producing popular models such as the UH-60 Black Hawk, SH-60 Seahawk, S-72, and the VH-3 and VH-60 helicopters, used by the President of the United States.
